Carmel Garrett has been involved in music since starting to play the piano when she was six years old. Totally committed to the idea that all children should learn music literacy and how to play instruments she sent her children to the VEC Music Education scheme 1986 where they learned, flute,clarinet and violin. She became a member of the VEC Music committee in 1988 and served as member of that committee and as a full member of the Galway City VEC for 17 years.
Following the path of her children who became members of Galway Youth Orchestra in 1987 she has been in involved with orchestra and has been its administrator for 25 years.
As a founding member and former chairman of the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras she has seen the development of the youth orchestra movement over the past 25 years. Her aim now is to see a pathway for Ireland’s musicians into the professional field of performance.
